Union reaches 25th day of strikes over impact of closure of alternative provision facility in East London

A union is now on the 25th day of strike action following the closure of one of a London borough’s two alternative provision facilities, which it said educate “some of the most vulnerable kids in the country”.

The National Education Union has been on strike for four days this week over conditions its members face at London East Alternative Provision (LEAP), based at the Harpley Centre in Bethnal Green in the borough of Tower Hamlets.

The local authority-funded facility is the only one of its kind for secondary pupils remaining in the borough, after the council closed in the summer the Riverside Pupil Referral Unit, on the Isle of Dogs nearly three miles away by road, despite concerns having been raised by NEU members.
