Ruth Miskin Literacy makes nearly �10 million profit in four years –taking cash pile for its sole shareholder to approaching �15 million

The company owned by the sometime government adviser Ruth Miskin, which runs phonics programmes in schools, saw its reserves grow towards �15 million in the last financial year, with total profits nearing �10 million in four years, its newly-published accounts have shown.

Ruth Miskin Literacy Limited registered post-tax profits in 2022-23 of £2.8 million, or 23 per cent of its £12.3 million turnover – swelling the amount available to Ms Miskin as its sole shareholder to £14.6 million.

This represents a remarkable 29-fold increase in “shareholders’ funds” from the equivalent figure of £500,000 in 2010.

Ruth Miskin Literacy Limited runs the popular Read Write Inc phonics programme. Its annual accounts show how turnover has increased strongly over recent years, with profits continuing at a healthy level and those annual surpluses then being ploughed into shareholders’ funds.

Ms Miskin, 67, is the only shareholder.
