Harris academy chain outranks almost all councils in England for number of 100k-plus employees, new data suggest

The Harris Federation, the London-based academy chain, had more employees on six-figure salaries than all but one of the councils across England, newly-published data suggest.

Harris, if it were a local authority, would have finished second in a list of councils ranked by the number of people on £100,000-plus produced by the Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA).

Harris, which runs 47 schools, had 31 people on £100k or more, its 2017-18 accounts show.

Among the 402 councils across the UK, for which the tax-reduction lobby group the TPA released high-pay data, only one – Essex – was revealed as having more people paid six figures.

It had 55 people in that category, according to the TPA.  It should be borne in mind, however, that Essex is a far larger organisation than Harris, with 13,681 staff according to its 2017-18 accounts, compared to 3,464 at Harris.
