The leader of an academy trust which was in the news last year over a controversial takeover of a school in Sussex saw his published remuneration rise by at least five per cent in 2018-19, newly-released accounts reveal.

Jon Whitcombe, principal of the 16-school Swale Academies Trust, saw his remuneration increase from £180-£185,000 in 2017-18 to £195-£200,000 last year.

That is a rise well in excess of inflation, and above the teachers’ annual pay award last year, although other aspects of Whitcombe’s pay package went down in 2018-19 (see below).

This comes in the context of ministers and officials having been speaking out about academy leader pay over the past two years, warning that they would not normally expect to see remuneration above £150,000, or pay rises higher than those of classroom staff.
