53 schools became academies last week, DfE data show

A total of 53 schools took on academy status last week, despite the coronavirus, Department for Education data show.
Institution-by-institution information from the government’s Get Information About Schools service shows that 39 schools were formally converted to academies on Wednesday, April 1st, having voluntarily left their local authorities.
A further 14 became “sponsored academies”: former local authority schools which in most cases have been forced to take on the status having received an adverse Ofsted inspection judgment.
In addition, three existing academies were listed as having changed trust on this day.
All of these moves will have been set in train well before Covid-19 forced school closures, but with detailed legal changes to their control being finalised last week.
