Fact-checking Rachel de Souza

Rachel de Souza, the government’s pick to become Children’s Commissioner for England, appears to have made two out-and-out false statements in an appearance before MPs yesterday.

Another claim seemed at odds with what a news report on her academy trust said about it back in 2015, and which was not challenged at the time.

The statements came as de Souza, who has been chief executive of the Norwich-based Inspiration trust chain since its inception in 2012, appeared before the cross-party Commons Education Select Committee as part of a “pre-appointment hearing” for the role.
