Who are the “vested interests” taken on by the Education Secretary?

Statement by Bridget Phillipson invites questions as to who she means.
Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, announced her candidacy for the post of deputy leader of the Labour Party last week by stating that she had “taken on powerful vested interests in the education sector – and even as they threw everything at me, I have never taken a backwards step.”
But who did she mean? Who have been those “vested interests”?
Ms Phillipson’s brief statement offered no further clues. So we will have to guess whom she meant. And the answer could be revealing, as we contemplate the nature of this government’s record in education so far.
